US National Team ReportsUS 0 Japan 0 - January 12, 2003 An uninspired offensive effort to start the year. However, the game featured strong performances from the starting defense and served as a good chance to get young players some playing time. US 4 Italy 0 - October 6, 2002 The match featured a strong second half offensively and a proper introduction to high school phenom Heather O'Reilly. US 4 Australia 0 - October 2, 2002 A nice training game on the road to WWC qualifying. The match featured a strong performance from the entire starting unit with special kudos going to the midfield. Cindy Parlow tallied two goals, but Kristine Lilly starred. US 8 Scotland 2 - September 8, 2002 A tough first half against a scrappy opponent. In the second half, the flood gates opened courtesy of the dynamic duo from Washington, Abby Wambach and Mia Hamm. A nice result against a sluggish Norway team. The match saw Brandi Chastain's switch to the central defense and nice performances from Tiffeny Milbrett and Cindy Parlow. US 3 Finland 0 - April 27, 2002 A fun shoot 'em up game a little short on goals, but not short on shots. The match featured a strong US possession game and an especially dynamic performance from Abby Wambach. US 7 Mexico 0 - January 12, 2002 Monsoon Bowl 2002. Soccer played in a driving rain, youngsters showing they're ready to shine, goals galore and a nice second half by Shannon MacMillan - what better way to start the year. US 4 Germany 1 - September 9, 2001 First and only game played in Nike Cup 2001. A nice result and well played match from a team that seemed re-energized and refocused due to the light international schedule. If you like Lorrie Fair diatribes, then this is the match report for you. Due to very unfortunate circumstances, this was not only the last match of Nike Cup, but the last match played in 2001. Norway 3 US 2 - September 28, 2000 The Olympic final. A game truly worthy of an international stage. The best played match of the tournament for the US. This one was filled with fast paced action from both teams, a dramatic last second goal for the US to send the game into extra time and ultimately a very opportunistic goal by the Norwegians to win gold. US 1 Brazil 0 - September 24, 2000 The Olympic semifinal. A rather flat offensive performance was balanced by a strong defensive effort in a lackluster game in which Team USA simply did what it took to win and move on to the final. US 3 Nigeria 1 - September 20, 2000 The last group game for the US in the Olympics. Nigeria played a very physical, bordering on violent, match during which the goal was as much to escape from the game intact as it was to win. This one wasn't pretty, but no one got hurt, and the US went into the semis with a win. US 7 Russia 1 - August 13, 2000 A nice tuneup game on the road to Sydney . . . and I think the last time we saw Carla Overbeck and Michelle Akers on the field together in National Team uniforms. US 1 Germany 0 - July 22, 2000 An entertaining match against tournament host Germany. Fawcett and Lilly had great matches, but the best player on the field was Tiffeny Milbrett. The trip to Europe in 2000 was a turning point in Milbrett's career. This was where her evolution from nice scorer and Mia Hamm running mate to one of the best players in the world began in full force. Her performances were outstanding the entire trip. The second game in the German leg of the summer of 2000's pre-Olympics European Tour. A game notable only as a harbinger of defensive miscommunications yet to come. The first of what would be an entire European tour of sluggish performances. A troublesome monkey that was several weeks away from death, a formidable face mask, a disorganized defense, and another strong performance from Tiffeny Milbrett were the highlights in this one.
